Week 5
Big fish and lots of them. After a slow start, the salmon showed up in force. We caught all 5 species with regularity this week.
Arriving with the salmon was an unprecedented number of large halibut. We had multiple large fish each day and many people joined the 100, 150, 200, and Bigger Than Me clubs.
Our guests had big smiles and sore muscles on the ride back to Juneau. The fish tales have just begun as guests recount their memories. They will be eating fish all winter long.
Here are a couple of memories guests shared with us.
Heard on Monday, “This place sucks. I’m going to have to come back next year, just to be sure!”
“I set my halibut rig up and then put my rod in the pole holder to go put my rain jacket on. Then Doug yelled, hey, there goes your pole. I turned in time to see the rod and reel disappear into the ocean. A few minutes later, Doug felt like he had something on his hook. He reeled in and we discovered that he had caught my rod/reel! Kevin handed the rod to me and, to my surprise, I still had a fish on. I was able to land the 40# halibut and continue fishing with that rod & reel. What a day!”

Week 4
Halibut, cod, and finally a few salmon. It is proving to be a slow start for salmon but we are starting to see a few in the catch.
This last week some guests went fishing and had a good halibut day. At the end of the day, they commented that “the only problem with a good day fishing/catching, is one can fill the freezer in one trip.” It is a nice problem to have.
As a reminder. When packing for your trip, try to pack your personal items in a carryon. On Alaska Airlines this year the first checked bag is $45 and the second bag is $55. Spend those baggage fees on getting your fish home. The third bag is $200. At the lodge we are helping by providing free laundry and laundry supplies.

Week 3
Halibut, rockfish, and cod continue to be the bulk of the catch. As the week progressed, we found larger fish and good quantity. We are hearing that the salmon situation is slow statewide. While not good news, we aren’t the only ones experiencing a slower catch. We are hopeful that it improves as the season continues.
While we hear many of our guests are burning up in the lower 48, here at Doc’s we are having a cooler than normal year. Anyway, we hope you are enjoying your summer festivities and have a happy 4th of July. The story of the week goes to one of our regular guests. He and his daughter landed a #141 halibut while hunting for new fishing grounds. Hint: they were between Mary’s flats and No Man’s.

Week 2
This week we enjoyed the longest days of the year.
Halibut started slow and picked up by end of the week. Friday was one for the books. It seemed like everyone had nice keepers. The biggest one weighed over 200 pounds.
We are seeing more salmon jumping but the catch is still slow. We expect that to change shortly.
We are proud to announce that the last of the new, covered boats is available for rent. Yellow Eye is rigged and ready to fish. Ask Lynda if you are interested in an upgrade to any of our cabin cruisers.

Week 1
We are off to a great start to the 2026 season. Guests this week were blessed with a lot of white fish. We had stronger tides which meant for stronger currents in some areas but that did not deter the fishing. In fact, we are using better methods that require current to find the bigger fish.
Salmon was a little slower as guests were heavily focused on halibut, cod and rock fish. We had a nice King on Monday and a Silver. Salmon are jumping regularly which is a good sign of things to come. Guests were heavily
The summer weather pattern has started finally. Our spring was unseasonably cold. As we leave the lodge this morning, the sun is out, the mountains are crowned with snow, and the winds are fair. In a word, BEAUTIFUL.
We can hardly wait to see you. Come join us, the boats, rooms, and fish are waiting.

Preseason
Ready or not! Let the fishing begin! After a great preseason preparation, we are more than ready. Staff have done an excellent job getting equipment ready and the facility is shining.
We brought in some fishing experts this week to provide training to our staff. They have been on the water teaching different techniques and methods. Our staff are better prepared to help you be more successful. As part of their training, the staff have been catching plenty of halibut, cod, and rockfish.
We have seen salmon jumping. Reports indicate that we should be catching by the time our guests arrive in a few short days.
The newest additions to Doc’s fleet are also being readied. We expect them to be ready in a couple of weeks. Talk to Lynda if you have been on a waitlist for a cabin cruiser, she might surprise you.

The state of Alaska has issued the fishing regulations for King Salmon in our area. This is the summary:
Nonresident
- The nonresident bag and possession limit is one king salmon, 28 inches or greater in length;
- From April 1 through June 30, the nonresident annual harvest limit is three king salmon, 28 inches or greater in length;
- From July 1 through December 31, the nonresident annual harvest limit is one king salmon, 28 inches or greater in length; any king salmon harvested from January 1 through June 30 will apply towards the one fish annual harvest limit.
- Immediately upon landing and retaining a king salmon, a nonresident must enter the species, date, and location on their sport fishing license or on a nontransferable harvest record.
