Breckenridge

It was our first day at Doc Warners and we are ready to catch some halibut. We had a good day. Several salmon and four halibut (about 20 pounds each). We were back at the dock about 4 pm. The staff was there to greet us with their wheel barrels for the catch. Ken was in the boat and started handing the halibut to the staff. Somewhere between Ken’s hands and the staff’s hands the halibut slipped and fell into the water at the dock (approximately 20 feet deep). The only good thing about this is that the fish landed white side up. Although, in 20-foot deep water it is hard to get a clear view of the fish. I thought the fish was a goner, but Ken was not going to let this one get away. Ken and several members of the staff spent over an hour trying to retrieve the fish. I even heard someone say he’d dive in after it. I said, “Absolutely not”. Finally, a staff member found a lure with a treble hook. After several attempts, Ken was able to snag the halibut and bring it up. I guess if there’s a will, there’s a way.

Today, Ken experienced the difference between landing a 20-pound halibut and a 100-pound halibut. As he struggled to get his halibut up into the boat he said, “ Barb, this sure as heck ain’t no 20 pounder”.
