Each summer I try to take some of our young staff out fishing for a few hours. Kohle, Autumn, and I tried several places without much success then headed toward the Green Buoy. As we came to the underwater ledge our fish-finder registered 204 feet which was about the depth I wanted. We dropped anchor and started eating lunch and got a strike. After a short fight we landed a 40+ pound halibut. A few minutes later my pole started to jump and the fight was on. The result was a 115 pounder. A little later we had another fish on, but this one acted much different than big halibut. Kohle manned the pole and I busied myself doing other things. I told Kohle he probably had a big skate. Suddenly a yell came from Kohle, “It’s a big halibut.” Sure enough. The fish weighed 141 pounds. We were just relaxing from that fish when Autumn’s pole bent to the water and the line started singing off the reel. No one was going to touch her pole, she was going to land this one herself. After a long struggle the fish was finally boated, all 155 pounds of it. Four fish in three hours weighing a total of 451 pounds. Was it skill or good luck? You decide.
